An OpenClaw Alternative for Business Owners Who Want the Result, Not the Project
EmAGI gives a business a digital employee, not a project: a persistent memory that brings back the right person, decision or company rule at the right moment, learning from every correction and the initiative to come back with the next step before anyone asks, designed, run and maintained for you. OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are strong open-source agents, but they are built to be installed, configured and kept running by you. If you run a business and want an AI agent doing real work this week, without a terminal, a server or a model key to manage, hire one. That is what EmAGI does.
We build EmAGI, so read this as our view. Every fact about OpenClaw, Hermes Agent and Manus below is taken from their own official pages, linked in place, checked on 2026-09-27.
Three ways to get an AI agent working for your business
Build it yourself. Install an open-source agent such as OpenClaw or Hermes Agent, pick a model, connect your chat apps and tools, and look after it from then on.
Rent a general cloud agent. Sign up for a service such as Manus and hand it tasks one by one.
Hire an agent for a project. Describe what it will run; the agent is assembled for your project, runs on infrastructure someone else maintains, and learns your business as it works. This is EmAGI.
| OpenClaw | Hermes Agent | Manus | EmAGI | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In its own words | “A self-hosted gateway that connects your favorite chat apps to AI coding agents.” | “The self-improving AI agent built by Nous Research.” | A cloud AI agent you give tasks to, run by the vendor | A platform for hiring AI agents that work as employees |
| Who sets it up | You: install script from the terminal, Node 24 or newer, then onboarding | You: install script from the terminal, with Python, Node.js, npm, ripgrep and FFmpeg | You sign up and start giving tasks | Nova, our hiring agent, interviews you about your project and assembles the agent |
| Where it runs | “Runs on your hardware”: a laptop or a shared team deployment | Your machine, “a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure” | The vendor's cloud | Hosted and maintained by EmAGI; nothing to install |
| The AI model | “You need an API key from your chosen provider” | Any provider you configure, with your own API keys | Included in the plan's credits | Runs on an AI subscription in your own name (Claude or ChatGPT); we can connect it for you |
| Who keeps it running | You: updates, keys, skills, troubleshooting | You: updates, keys, backends, troubleshooting | The vendor | EmAGI; on the $1,000 plan a dedicated human specialist looks after your agent |
| Price of the software | Free, MIT licence | Free, MIT licence | Free plan with 300 daily credits; Pro from $20/month | From $350/month per agent, cancel any time |
| Best for | People who want to own and change the code | Technical users who want a self-improving agent under their control | Handing individual tasks to a general-purpose cloud agent | Owners who want a role filled: sales, support, operations, research, documents |

When OpenClaw or Hermes Agent is the better choice
Pick an open-source agent when the project itself is part of the point. You want to read and change the code. You enjoy wiring up models, skills and chat apps. You have a developer on the team who will install it, update it when a new release lands, rotate the keys and fix it when something breaks. In that case the software costs nothing and the control is complete.
When hiring a ready agent is the better choice
Pick a ready agent when the business needs the work done and nobody on the team wants a new system to look after. You explain the job the way you would to a new employee, and the agent starts on it. The practical differences an owner notices:
- No setup project. No install script, no server, no environment variables. You talk to Nova, and the agent usually starts work within an hour.
- Built for your project, not a toolbox. The agent is assembled for the work you describe and learns your prices, clients and rules as it works. See what a sales agent does day to day.
- Memory of your business. The agent keeps persistent memory of projects, people and decisions, and that memory belongs to you. More on how the long-term memory works.
- Managed from the messenger you already use. You give tasks in Telegram, a web chat or Nextcloud Talk, while the work happens in its browser, your documents, email and the systems it is connected to. See an AI agent you manage from Telegram.
- Nothing for you to patch. The platform is hosted and updated by EmAGI.
What “no setup” looks like in practice
- Open emagi.ai and describe in plain words what the agent will run, not which buttons it should press.
- Nova asks about the tasks, the tone and the tools, the way a recruiter would, and assembles the agent.
- Connect your AI subscription (or let us do it on the $500 plan), add the agent to the chats where its work is discussed, and hand it the documents it needs.
What it costs
$350 per month, with the agent running on an AI subscription issued in your own name. $500 per month if you want us to connect that subscription and set up your channels. $1,000 per month for a dedicated human specialist who looks after your agent. Each additional agent is $15 per month. The full breakdown is on the pricing page; the arithmetic against a human hire is on AI agent vs hiring a person. Questions people ask
Is EmAGI a hosted version of OpenClaw?
No. EmAGI is its own platform for hiring AI agents that work as employees. The comparison is about the choice you face as an owner: build and run an agent yourself, or hire one that is designed, run and maintained for you.
Do I need a server, a terminal or an API key?
No server and no terminal. The agent thinks on an AI subscription in your own name, Anthropic Claude or a ChatGPT plan. On the $350 plan you connect it yourself; on the $500 plan we connect it for you.
Can I still use open-source tools alongside it?
Yes. The agent works through a browser, APIs and documents, so the tools your team already runs stay where they are. It does not ask you to replace them.
What does the agent do that a chatbot does not?
It keeps memory, uses a browser and APIs, produces documents, publishes pages, makes calls and acts without being asked. The longer answer is on AI agent vs chatbot.
